Winter 2020/2021 Musings

 Student Support Winter Updates

As 2020 fades into history, the school counselors wanted to reflect on the past year and update parents, students, and staff about upcoming events within our department.

We also want to wish everyone a Happy New Year.  We, like many of you, are incredibly hopeful for a better 2021, one filled with peace, health, and a return to normalcy.

We will continue to support students, families, and staff moving forward, regardless of the environment we find ourselves in, with compassion and commitment.  The role of the school counselor is to support students in three areas: academics, social/emotional wellness, and college and career planning.  We will continue to prioritize student well-being as we navigate the uncertainties ahead of us.

Logistically, if the counselors are on campus, our office will be moving due to construction sometime in the spring.  Look for updates via future correspondence.

Sincerely,

Molly Norris (A-G) anorris@shorewood.k12.wi.us

Scott Brown (H-O) sbrown@shorewood.k12.wi.us

Introducing our School Counseling Intern:

Lucas Mader

Hey all, my name is Mr. Mader.  I get the opportunity to learn from the team of school counselors at SHS as an intern this semester.  I am originally from Appleton, Wisconsin and a proud Badger alumnus. After teaching for 3 years, I decided to pursue my masters degree in school counseling.  I love staying active by kayaking, biking, and running when the weather is nice and staying in and watching a good TV show when it's cold.  I am looking forward to being able to travel all over the world again.  During college, I had the opportunity to study abroad twice, so let me know if you ever want to connect or talk about anything that involves traveling.  I am excited to be part of SHS this semester and getting to know you.

Academic Support

Counselors have been meeting virtually and in person with students who are struggling academically.  We recognize the difficulty some students experience and have been reaching out via email, phone, and Zoom/Meet to tackle challenges.  Reach out if you need support.

Below are some tips for students who are struggling academically:

This video includes some basic ways in which to improve virtual learning habits:

How To Stay Organized for Distance Learning

In addition, it can be useful for parents and guardians to develop a time management plan with students.

To access the full time management worksheet, click on this link: Time Management Worksheet

In addition, we all recognize how motivation can ebb and flow throughout the year, particularly when instruction is virtual.  Here are some tips for parents regarding helping students stay motivated:

For the full article: Engagement and Motivation

Finally, in mid to late January, the counselors will be delivering lessons via Integrated Wellness classes regarding course registration for the 2021-2022 school year.  It is never too early to start planning for next year.

For a full overview of all of the course offerings available, please review our website, paying special attention to the curriculum handbook:

Course Selection Guides

Other important deadlines:

March 1: The deadline to return Early College Credit Program (ECCP) applications.  See this link for the application and more details about this program, which lets eligible students take courses for college credit at nearby universities.

March 26: The deadline to turn in an application to opt out of junior year integrated health classes.  You must meet certain eligibility requirements to do this, including two years participation in a WIAA sponsored sport, while doubling up on a core academic course.

May 1: the deadline to turn in eAchieve applications in order to take online courses through our partnership with the Waukesha School District.

College and Career Support

The counselors continue to support students as they pursue their postsecondary goals.  The following activities have occurred this fall to support students as they explore and research potential careers and educational options after high school:

  1. In August, the counselors facilitated a virtual college workshop, including tips and tricks regarding college essays; you can find that information through this link: College Workshop.
  2. We have continued to present college and career lessons in Team Concepts (students took a Career Survey) and Lifetime Wellness (students completed a college search and began to create their resume).  All lessons can be found virtually on our website, at this link: Grade Level Lessons.
  3. In the fall, the counselors held weekly college workshops for seniors working on applications.
Junior Conferences

Junior conferences continue into January.  The counselors have conducted many virtual conferences already.  During these conferences, student and families receive individualized information regarding their post-secondary plans.  The conferences typically last one hour or more.  If you have not signed up yet, please do so via the following links:

Molly Norris (Last names A-G): Link to Ms. Norris’s calendar
Scott Brown (Last names H-O):  Link to Mr. Brown’s calendar
Jennifer Hoffman (Last names P-Z): Link to Ms. Hoffman's calendar

Reminders:
Freshmen: you will be taking a career cluster survey this spring, but feel free to check in on the academic and personal goals you created in Naviance.  Are you meeting those goals?

Sophomores (first semester Team Concepts students): evaluate your goals as well and review the results of your career interest profiler.  Be sure to save three careers you are interested in.

Juniors (first semester Lifetime Wellness students): Be sure to work through the Super Match in Naviance.  Save three schools that sound of interest to you.  Complete your resume by May in order to ask for letters of recommendation at that time.  Check out our video concerning letters at this link: Letters of Recommendation.

Seniors: After you apply to a school, be sure to send in your ACT scores from act.org (if required), and be sure to request that your transcripts/ letters get sent.  Use this form to do so: Transcript Requests.

Parents: Check out our website where you will find lots of information about college planning, financial aid, and the career process.  Check out Naviance Student with your child!

All: Be sure to check out college virtual tours.  You can find a lot online simply by doing a quick search.

Naviance Updates:

Some exciting updates have occurred within Naviance, including an entirely updated career section.  You can now filter by career, as well as take shortened career surveys that you can reset on your own.  In addition, work based learning opportunities will now by embedded within the career section.  As the counselors hear of opportunities, including internships and career fairs, they will be uploaded into the system.  Students can now see a "Work Based Learning" Section when they click on the "Careers" tab.  There is already one opportunity from the Boys and Girls Club!

Perhaps most exciting, the school district now offers a self-paced, free ACT prep course through Naviance.  If students log in and scroll to the bottom of the home page, they will see the link to test prep.  A video demo explaining how best to utilize this service was already sent via email and is also on our website.

We encourage all students to take a diagnostic test and begin preparing for the March 9, 2021 ACT test!

Naviance has also updated its scholarship page to include college specific scholarships (in addition to local and regional scholarships not attached to a particular university).

Scholarships

The Shorewood High School scholarship application is now available on our website.  Seniors are encouraged to apply!  Apply at our website: SHS Scholarships.  DUE JANUARY 22!

Testing Updates

As of now, all major standardized tests will occur on campus.  Information, including specific details about safety measures, etc. will come through email.

PSAT (grade 11): January 26--registration due by January 8th (coordinator: Jennifer Hoffman).  For more details, see this letter.
ACT (grade 11): March 9 (coordinator: Molly Norris)
ASPIRE  (grades 9-10): April 13-14 (coordinator: Jennifer Hoffman)

Social and Emotional Support

The counselors continue to prioritize wellness.  We recognize the many additional stressors brought on by the pandemic and continue to reach out to students who are struggling with their mental health.

This semester, we have conducted a number of strategies meant to help students, including:
  • Providing open virtual office hours for interested students
  • Sending out a mental health survey every quarter to all students and following up with those who are struggling
  • Providing in-person opportunities for students who need additional help
  • Providing refresher training to all first semester Team Concepts and Lifetime Wellness students on the signs of suicide
  • Delivering a lesson on wellness strategies to all freshmen
  • Conducting a fun weekly trivia group at 11:15 every Wednesday, called "Counselor Connections."  Here is the link: Counselor Connections.
  • Conducting voluntary campus tours to interested freshmen (more to come)
  • Holding individual meetings with students who need additional support
  • Sending care packages to all students in the school
Most of these activities will continue into 2021.  In addition, we will present our signs of suicide lesson and short screener to all freshmen in the spring semester, and we will be starting a research supported group for struggling freshmen.  Stay tuned.

For our full presentation to the school board regarding how we are supporting student, staff, and family wellness during this time, please check out these slides: SHS WELLNESS.

And feel free to check out our wellness lesson delivered to all freshmen:

For the full presentation, please check out this video: Freshmen Wellness Lesson.

Parent and Family Wellness

We have also conducted parent wellness nights in collaboration with our partners at Children's Wisconsin.  Look for more of these in the spring.

Recent video presentations can be found on our home page, including our parent and family wellness video.  Scroll to the bottom to view.  SHS Student Support Homepage.

Children's WI at SHS

Finally, we continue our collaboration with Children's Wisconsin.  If you feel your child would benefit from ongoing therapy with a trained therapist, please reach out to your school counselor.
Additional Mental Health Tips

  1. Roger's Hospital has a fantastic blog that captures a number of best practices and mental health tips.  Consider checking it out at this link: Rogers Behavioral Health.
  2. Finally, this anxiety workbook, specifically focused on the pandemic, can be a big help to struggling students.  Here is the link: Coronavirus Anxiety Workbook.
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

To conclude, we are heartened by this quote, which highlights what we hope all of us remember as we move forward through this difficult time.

Please reach out to your child's counselor should you ever need anything.

Fall 2020 Musings

Welcome to the 2020-21 School Year

What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been (and will be)

As the 2020-21 school year begins, those lyrics from the Grateful Dead seem more apt than ever.  As we begin the school year, students and families are continuing to navigate the virtual learning environment, balancing work, school, and family.  Needless to say, it is an anxious time in our world and our lives, with the virus, social unrest, an election year, and simple daily struggles bombarding us in what can feel like an endless negative cycle.

Despite all of that, the Shorewood High School community remains strong and supportive.  The school counselors know this year will have its ups and downs, but we are always here to help, to listen, to advise, to advocate for, and to support equity and racial justice.  Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

We know everyone is getting inundated with information, so I will try to keep this short (not a strong suit for me).  On to the bullet points!

First, here are the counselors at textbook pick up, donning our masks and ready to start the school year!  You can't tell, but I am smiling.

And soon to debut on our website, our bitmoji selves!  Students will be able to click on various images to get information about a variety of topics.  I think we look rather good, don't you?

Speaking of our website, we have TONS of important information, including information about mental health, college and careers, and course planning, to name only a few resources.  We also created videos last year of all of our major career lessons, so check those out!

Nuts and Bolts

Contact:  the best way to contact counselors will be via email.  We will be working from home some days and on campus other days, utilizing a flex schedule to best meet the needs of families and students.  If you would like to set up a virtual or in-person meeting, please email your child's counselor first.  Do not drop-in, as the school cannot accommodate drop-ins at this time.

Scott Brown (sbrown@shorewood.k12.wi.us) last names H-O
Jennifer Hoffman (jhoffman@shorewood.k12.wi.us) last names P-Z

As the situation changes, we will be sure to keep people informed.

Academics

Add Class Deadline: Sept. 15

Drop Class Deadline: Sept. 25*

*changing classes is more difficult this year, due to the need to balance classes by alpha if we move to a hybrid model.  Schedule change requests cannot be guaranteed.  All students will need to have a parent/guardian email the counselor approving of any changes.

Early College Credit Program Application Deadlines: Oct. 1 (for Spring classes; open to juniors and seniors)

We will still be virtually presenting academic and career lessons to all grades in Integrated Health and Social Studies in the fall and spring (hopefully in person).

To see our lessons by video, check out this link:

College Application Process

  • Create a realistic list of 5-8 colleges you want to apply to
  • Research admissions requirements and note them
  • Apply on the web--pay application fee (Common Application or another method; if common application, waive your right to see your letters of rec.).  Get your essay looked at by others.
  • Submit transcripts and letters of recommendation (one week before the deadline): https://sites.google.com/shorewood.k12.wi.us/shsgreyhounds-sss/senior-transcripts
  • Send in test scores if required from act.org or another source

Mental Health Updates

Most community members are now aware of the fantastic partnership between the Shorewood School District and Children's Wisconsin.  Through various grants, the district will have access to consultation and mental health training.  A therapist will also be seeing students at the high school; this person is now working at the high school a few days each week, spending some time at Shorewood Intermediate School in addition to the high school.

Therapeutic services will be provided during the school day and after school, but they will function as they would at any outpatient clinic, in that insurance will be billed.  If parents/guardians are interested in looking into these services, they should contact their student's school counselor, who can facilitate the process and connect parents and students to Children's Wisconsin.

Here is the bio for the therapist working at the high school:

Alecia A. Corbett, MSW, LCSW, RYT-200
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Children’s Wisconsin

Ms. Corbett is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has worked in the field for over 10 years.  In the past, she was a School Social Worker with experience working with families and students in grades K-12.  Currently, she delivers school-based mental health services at Shorewood High and Intermediate Schools.  She has a variety of experience including crisis team facilitation, suicide assessment and prevention, and evidence-based practices.  She looks forward to working with families and students here in our district.

Signs of Suicide, a research based intervention was reviewed in all Integrated Wellness classes in grades 10 and 11.  We also will be doing a full lesson on this program for all freshmen soon. The program discusses the warning signs of suicide, as well as how students should react if they are concerned about a student or themselves.  The full lesson will be provided to freshmen in the coming weeks.

Counselors also presented a lesson about stress and balance to all freshmen students.  In addition, we talked about career clusters, and students took a survey to gauge what clusters (business, healthcare, etc.) might match their interests.  Login with your child to review these results.

Regarding stress, we spoke about some basic stress relief techniques that students can use, including paced breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization.  We also gave students a list that included ways to reduce stress.

Here is the link to the sheet we shared with students: Stress Coping Strategies.

In addition, we plan on screening freshmen students this spring for potential mental health issues; look for information about that coming soon.

As always, please be sure to reach out to your child's counselor should you have any concerns regarding mental health.

Resources:

  1. Check out this great blog from Rogers Memorial; a number of topics are discussed that may be of use to parents and students.  Click on this link.
  2. The Center for Healthy Minds out of UW-Madison has a number of good resources, as well as a solid description of why mental health problems are increasing.  The bulk of the website is focused on college students, but many of the ideas contained on the website can be applied to high school students as well.  Here is the link.
  3. Watch this short TED Talk about the importance of being more mindful from Richard Davidson, a professor at UW-Madison.  The TED Talk focuses on finding ways to promote mental well-being through exercises that involve the mind.
  4. Two new informational resources from Rogers regarding screen time and social media are below.  Studies have long documented a correlation between screen time/social media use and negative mental health effects.  Limiting both can be important for teens.  Screen Time. Social Media.

Academic and College/Career Updates

A number of academic updates occur mid-year; take a look below!

Scheduling:
  • Students will register for courses between February 5th and February 12th on their own.  Information regarding this process will be passed out in homerooms, as well as instructions regarding how to register.
  • This month, students should speak with teachers, counselors, and parents/guardians concerning what choices best match their career and academic plans.  Counselors will be presenting graduation requirements in Integrated Wellness courses throughout the month of January.  Counselors will also present this information during lunch to any students who opted out of Lifetime Wellness on January 30th.  This will occur in the Think Space.
  • More information about specific courses, as well as course descriptions, can be found on our website, under the course selection tab.
  • If students are interested in courses not offered at SHS, they should see their counselors soon, as deadlines for other programs come quickly in the Spring.
Academic and Career Planning:
  • Counselors will be in Team Concepts and Lifetime Wellness classrooms in March or April to present on college and career planning.  Sophomore students will be taking an in-depth career survey, while juniors will dive into the college search.  Be sure to log on to Naviance with your child to view the results and see all that Naviance has to offer when it comes to college and career planning.
  • Naviance, unfortunately, is requiring all students to change their passwords in order to access the site.  Counselors can no longer control this.  Please continue to use your Shorewood email (just the first part, not the @shorewood.k12.wi.us) as the login.  However, we would like students to create new passwords that follow this pattern: birthdate and initials capitalized.  For instance, a student named George Greyhound who was born on January 15th, 2001, would create the following password: 01152001GG.  The password MUST be 10 characters in length, so it is important for students to put the zero before single digit months.  It is also important that they list the full birth year.  If students have trouble doing this, they should see their counselors.
  • Junior conference are wrapping up for all of the counselors.  This hour long meeting with students and parents to discuss post-secondary options and planning is a great opportunity to learn about next steps and how to plan for life after high school.  Contact your child's school counselor if you still have not signed up for a conference.
College Applications and Scholarships:
  • Mid-Year transcripts will be sent to all colleges on Monday, January 27.  This provides an important and required update to all colleges regarding student progress.
  • Financial aid awards should arrive in the winter and spring for colleges.  If students or parents need help making sense of these documents, please stop in.  Students have until May 1, 2020 to decide where they want to attend.
  • For students interested in the MATC Promise, please be sure to apply to MATC by February 7th; you must also file the FAFSA and complete the Promise application for free tuition.  Check out this website for more information: MATC Promise.
  • After February 1, most colleges with set deadlines for fall admissions will have passed.  However, many universities with rolling admissions will still accept applications.  See your counselor with any questions.
  • Some tips for future college graduates: 15 Tips for High School Graduates
  • Seniors should consider creating an account at fastweb, to search for private scholarships.
  • The College Opportunity Scholarships offer a chance to win money simply for doing things like creating a college list.  Check them out here: College Board Opportunity Scholarships.
  • Don't forget to apply to SHS scholarships.  The application can be found here: SHS Scholarships.
Grades:
  • Semester grades have posted!  If students struggled in any of their classes, they should see their counselors and meet with their teachers to develop a plan for second semester.  Counselors will be crafting plans for students who failed a course.
  • Some great study tips for students can be found here: How to Study Better in High School.
  • And some great tips about how to be successful in high school: Successful High School Students.
Testing:
  • The state ACT occurs on March 3 at SHS.  Only juniors will be on campus that day for what is always an ideal testing environment.  Be sure to check out some practice questions at ACT.org.  If you want to prep further, see your counselor for ideas.
  • ASPIRE testing for freshmen and sophomore will occur on April 14th and 15th--this is a pre-ACT test and can provide valuable information regarding how a student might do on the ACT test.
  • AP testing will occur the first two weeks of May.  Students have already signed up for this test.  The schedule can be found here: AP schedule. Be sure to check out this site regarding test prep: Preparing for the Exam.

Thanks everyone!  Don't hesitate to reach out.
